Isn’t it ironic that the first big achievement in our lives, one of the most memorable moments, is when a baby takes their first step. And then the second. And before you know it, our parents are proudly announcing to anyone who will listen, “Yes yes, they’re walking”.
Why is it that as we get older the congratulations given for our steps seem to diminish? Walking. There is such a stigma that surrounds this form of physical activity, claiming that it isn’t in fact a form of exercise. And sure, you’re not necessarily going to start competing in cross fit competitions from a daily walk, but this primal movement is one of the most effective ways to prevent disease, maintain weight, and control muscle and joint pain. Doctors and health experts agree that walking is the one activity that is safe enough for anyone and everyone to do.
If you’re returning from injury or find that in your golden years it’s harder to muster up the mental stamina to start moving your body, walking is THE best way to get back into it.
Why? Because the pressure of thinking we have to run 10km can be the catalyst of why we fail to get back to a healthy fitness regime or successful recovery after injury. We fear how long it will take to get our fitness back, dread the muscle pain and physical exhaustion, and then convince ourselves that there is no way we will ever get used to the pain that may come from exercise. Walking is a good, if not the best stepping stone to getting back on track – excuse the pun if you will.
Some of the benefits of walking include:
– Increased cardiovascular and pulmonary (heart and lung) fitness
– Improved conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, joint and muscular pain or stiffness
– Promoting stronger bones and improved balance
– Increased muscle strength and endurance
– Maintained body fat
If the hesitation comes from a previous injury or ligament damage, or you suffer from arthritis, products for joint and muscle pain such as Zen, will better enable you to take the reins and get back on course. They work to support blood circulation, they warm up the muscles and support joint care.
Walking is not inferior to any other form of physical activity. Your joints will thank you for a brisk walk a day because it isn’t a jarring exercise like running which can have negative and ongoing impact on joints and muscles.
Get up, get moving and don’t be afraid to proudly announce to anyone who will listen, “Yes yes, I’m walking”.
